I have to brag for a moment.
Do you ever all of a sudden realize that your child knows something that you had no clue that they know? It’s happened to me way too many times to count. [hangs head in shame]
The most recent occurred this past weekend. I was driving Buddy home from a birthday party he attended. He was going through his trinkets and trash goody bag and pulled out a cheap plastic compass. As we were driving down the road, he said, “Mom, we’re going North right now.”
I checked out my digital display on the dashboard of my truck (what can I say, I’m directionally challenged) and sure enough, we were going North. I thought to myself, good guess. But then again, the “N” for North is usually the biggest letter on the compass and it would make sense to guess North.
A minute or so later, I turned left down another road. From the back seat, I hear, “Now we’re going West Mom!”
I once again check the digital display on my dash and sure enough, we were going West. I was flabbergasted. And proud.
I honestly don’t think I’d be able to read a compass without messing around with it for a few minutes. And yet, my 6.5 year old has no problem figuring it out. I know who I’d want with me if I ever got lost in the woods!!
This post is brought to you as part of Proud Mommy Moments.
What are Proud Mommy Moments?? Glad you asked. This is a new weekly meme that Emmy of Emmy Mom- One Day at a Time and I will be hosting.

Life with children is often very interesting. There will be times when our children will receive an award, accomplish something great and we will be beaming with pride. And then there are moments where the pride could easily be replaced with embarrassed- but at least it gives us something to blog about.
So beginning next week, every Thursday you can link up with either Emmy or me and tell us your Proud Mommy Moment. Whether it be something that truly makes you proud or something that makes you want to hang your head in embarrassment. You can head over to Emmy’s blog today-click here- and see an example of a not-so-Proud Mommy Moment.
This is your chance to brag about your kids without being accused of bragging-as we have asked you to tell about how amazing your kids are. Or if the occasion calls for it-you can tell us those things that in a few years we will think are really funny-but right now, not so much. You can tell a story, show a picture, or format it however you would like; we just ask that you include the Proud Mommy Moments button and link back to Emmy’s and/or my blog.
And no-you don’t have to be a Mommy or even a parent to participate-maybe you have a pet you love like a child, or maybe you have accomplished something that your Mommy would be proud of you-and dad’s you can totally participate too.
So join us next Thursday-and every Thursday and tell us about your Proud Mommy Moment.

GUEST POST ALERT I’m guest posting over at The Scoop on Poop today. It’s all about how to appropriately plan a child’s birthday party. Of course, it has my sarcastic flavor sprinkled all over it.

I’m sharing my awesome with Momma Made It Look Easy and you can too.

Wow that is pretty smart. Ya know my mom still argues with me over directions like that because she gets them backwards all the time..
LOL! I get confused over directions all the time…that’s why I love my digital display in my truck so much!
I’m the one with the sense of direction in our family. If the car and truck did not have the automatic compass, Nick would be more lost than he usually is.
I’m going to have to think of some moments and come back next week.
Good for you on being all directionally orientated!!
Definitely come back this week and link up!
I have the perfect not so proud mommy moment that I can share next week!
Awesome!! I can’t wait to read it.
We used to joke that my daughter was a walking GPS. We would be driving somewhere for only the second time and she knew exactly where we were and where to go.
That’s awesome. It’ll serve her well someday. But also, her husband will probably drive her crazy with his inability to listen to her or stop to ask for directions. LOL
Wow that is impressive! Don’t they just blow you away with the things they say?!?
They really do. I kinda like it when they out of nowhere show me what they know. It’s such a great feeling.
Impressive! I KNOW I didn’t know that at 6 1/2 . . . or 26 1/2
Smart boy! And this is a great idea!! (I’m thinking he just *may* have gotten his smarts from his mom!)
Aww, thanks. But the credit all belongs to Emmy. She’s done a couple of these and asked me to help her turn it into a meme. I’m just along for the ride. Yay me.
That is a great moment! And very impressive. Always makes me very happy when something like that happens as then I realize that even if I forget to teach certain things they will still learn it
Me too!! There’s so much I feel like they’ve learned on their own or picked up from other people. Phew.
That’s great. David gave the kids an old compass to play with and they love it. Of course I’m not sure they really know how to use it.
Proud moment, Last night Baby Girl told me that she really knows how to tell time now. And she does. Which is cool. Until I want her to go to bed early and can’t lie about what time it is. Not that I would ever do that.
I know. Buddy knows how to tell time too and he’ll tell us it’s not really bed time. The bonus though? I tell him on the weekend that he’s not allowed to get up until the first number is at least an 8.
sweet surprises. love it…
They are awesome, aren’t they?
this is perfect, sometimes we need the reminder of their accomplishments, not their jerkwad ways. I mean. Little slip ups.
LOL at “jerkwad ways”. I sooo know what you mean!
I showed up at the perfect time! This is a great idea and I will be checking back soon with my proud mommy moments!
Thanks for stopping by! I can’t wait to read your PMM!
Can I borrow Buddy if I should get lost in the woods? I am lucky if I know my right from my left and I am impressed by his skills!
I know, right?!?!
It’s probably a good thing I’m not a very outdoorsy type person.
I love this idea! That is totally me. And the reason he figured it out so quickly is because he’s male. They come out of the womb able to do stuff like that.
He’s must have inherited all directional abilities that my family was supposed to have, because my dad and brothers struggle with directions.
I think it must be a boy thing because Henry and Grant are both obsessed with the compass display in my car! Sounds like a fun linky:)
It must be a boy thing!
I hope the meme is successful. I know I have a lot of material for it.
Awesome! He knows where he is going more than I do! Wait, I am not admitting that. THe new meme sounds fun!
He knows more than me too. That’s sad.
Ha ha! He would totally put me to shame with a compass! Love how they pick up things so fast!
Isn’t it amazing?? I have no idea where he would have learned that. We didn’t learn to read a compass until 8th grade, back when I was in school.
Now if you’re lucky, that will translate to math brilliance in school!
We can only hope!!
Great job! I’ll admit, I’d better never be lost in the woods myself, I’m forever relying on my digital display in my van.
Stopping by from Momma Made It Look Easy.
Thanks for stopping by! I’m way behind in visiting other blogs (and responding to comments), but I hope to be by your blog soon!
Great post! I followed you here from Momma Made It Look Easy.
As a homeschooling mom, I expected to teach my son, but not to learn so many things from him. I have to admit, it makes me proud, too, when he rattles off information he has picked up from who-knows-where.
I like that you are giving us a weekly chance to brag a little!

Thanks for stopping by! I’m behind in visiting other blogs and responding to comments, but I hope to visit you soon.
I hope you decide to play along with Proud Mommy Moments sometime!
That is completely awesome and amazing! I too tend to be directionally challenged and give hubby (or anyone) grief when directions include things like turn West on such and such. Dude! left or right?
Kids are so very amazing and sometimes, we forget how brilliantly their minds work.
Thank you!
I so hear you on people saying East, West, etc. I need to know which way to turn, not which compass direction. LOL
Hey, being able to read a compass is a lost skill. That is awesome. It is also a comfort to know that in a pinch the crap from the birthday party might save a life.
LOL! I know! Who would have figured the crappy compass from the birthday party actually worked??
Sarcastic is my favorite flavor.
It’s my favorite flavor too. You have good taste.
I love it! I am so directionally and geographically challenged. My son amazes me everyday.
Stopping by from MMILE!
Thanks for stopping by! I’ll be stopping by your blog soon!
Isn’t it great when our kids amaze us (I mean, when they amaze us in a good way)?
What a smart little guy. I’m directionally challenged. Fortunately, all 3 of the guys at my house can read a map.
I’m happy he can do it, but I foresee a lot of back-seat driver moments. Ugh.
Love this idea!
Thank you! I can’t take the credit though…Emmy’s done a few of them. I just offered to help her make it a meme and cohost it.
I will look forward to Proud Mommy Moments!
Great!! And I hope you decide to link up!
This is such a fun idea! I love it!
Thanks! The credit belongs to Emmy. I’m just cohosting.
That’s awesome, and this is a great idea!
I know. I’m so amazed by him all the time.
Thank you. Emmy deserves all the credit. It was her idea.
That is awesome. He is a smart little cookie!!
Thanks! I was pretty impressed.
Too cool! Kids are so much smarter than I . . . Uh, WE . . . give them credit for sometimes, LOL.
