What’s in a Name?

Seeing as little Lucas just arrived, and I shared with you all the struggle I had coming up with a name for him, I thought it was the perfect time to use one of Mama Kat’s prompts and link up with her Writer’s Workshop.

Let me start with Buddy, who officially is Jack Thomas.

I’ve shared before that I have a “rule” where I have to have two names to work with so that I can then choose between them once I see the baby. After considering many different names for Buddy, including Cole and Kaden, we decided on Jack or Nicholas. Jack being my favorite name, and Nicholas being Jdaddy’s favorite. In the end, after a 45 hour labor that ended in a c-section, Jdaddy gave in and proclaimed his name as Jack as soon as he brought him to see me. Buddy got his middle name from my dad, Thomas. My oldest brother has the middle name Thomas. His only son has the middle name Thomas, and my youngest brother’s son also has the middle name of Thomas. In my family, the oldest boy in each family has the middle name Thomas. I guess it’s a tradition now. A quick funny story…I was pregnant with Buddy just as the Friends sitcom was ending. If you remember back to the end of that show, Monica was pregnant and had twins. I was sitting on the couch watching the episode where she delivered twins, to the surprise of everyone. Before they even announced it, I said to Jdaddy, “They better NOT name that baby boy Jack because that will make that name insanely popular and I will be so pissed.” Of course, they named the baby Jack and I’m pretty sure all of my neighbors heard me yell “NOOOOOO!!!!” as soon as it was announced. Obviously, in the end, that didn’t deter me.

Buster is officially Nicholas Drew. We had a really hard time coming up with a second name in case he didn’t look like Nicholas. In the end, we decided that we would think of something if he didn’t look like a Nick. It’s a really good thing that he did! He gets his middle name from Jdaddy. Drew is also Jdaddy’s middle name, and we thought it went well with Nicholas.

Now for Lucas (who still needs a nickname…someone suggested Bubba, but if you saw how little he was, you’d know that it doesn’t really fit him). After a lot of contemplation and stress, we decided that he would either be Lucas or Joshua. Lucas was Jdaddy’s favorite and Joshua was mine. I wasn’t sold on Lucas at all, and to be quite honest, after 3 weeks, the name still doesn’t come easily to me (as in, sometimes I have to stop and think about his name), but I know it will grow on me and eventually I won’t be able to imagine him with any other name. So many people loved the name Lucas, including Jdaddy, that it seemed wrong to give him any other name. Lucas’ middle name is William, which is another family name. William was the name of my Mother-in-law’s dad. I actually really like William (Will) as a first name, but there are a ton of variations of William in MIL’s family, so we decided to use it as a middle name rather than a first name.

All of my boys have original first names, but we wanted their names to have some meaning, hence the family middle names.

So now, given all that, I need some nickname suggestions for Luke…or is it now time to drop the blog nicknames and just go by their given names??

Do you have any idea how confused I am going to be if you start referring to Buddy and Buster as Jack and Nicholas!? ;)

But -they all have such beautiful REAL names – I say go by the real names. !!

You could call Lucas – Bruiser if you decide to stay with the nicknames.

My kids all have names that have meaning …. whether it’s a family name or not. To me it was important to give the kids a family name.

I like all of your boys names. They’re unique but not so much as to be totally outrageous.

I say go with real names…because it is going to take me forever to remember the new nickname you decide on for Lucas:) I’ll read Bubba and be all kinds of confused! My boys all have family middle names too. So are you going to call him Luke or Lucas?

I am a big fan of classic names so I love all your boys’ names and the way you honored family with the middles! Such great choices.

We did it the other way around and honored family with my daughter’s first name (she’s named after my grandmother) and a name that we both just loved as her middle. :)

I say you stick with their real names!
I do love the name Lucas. It was on our list last time. Boys names are so hard for us!

I did the same with having 2 names to pick from until they were born(except our oldest, who is a junior). I got my way b/c there was no way Hubs would argue with me after I just gave birth.

The funny thing is that we really thought we were going to name our second Andrew, and call him Drew. I didn’t tell anyone in my family(b/c they tend to argue about names and I didn’t want to hear it), but Hubs told his mom. And even though we went with something else, for a few weeks after he was born, his mom would forget and call him Andrew or Drew.

When Lucas -my Lucas- was born we always called him Buddy and my dad would always say, he is going to think that is his name!

It would be a switch if you started using their real names on your blog- totally up to you.

Oh and Happy Birthday! :)

So sweet that they have this thought and care put into their names… and how they are growing into their namesakes too!

I love those names – you done good!
