Sometimes it’s the little things…you know what I mean?

Last week, while sitting with Buster during drop off at daycare, his teacher walked up and handed me a piece of paper. It was one of those worksheets where there’s a space for a picture, and then lines underneath for a caption.

The picture wasn’t much, but just beneath it, the caption said it all.

I couldn’t help but smile. Sometimes, being a mom is the best feeling in the world.

The last few weeks, I’ve been sharing some truly proud moments. As much as I love humor and snark, and wish I could share an “not-so” proud moment, I have another truly proud moment to share with you this week.

The other night, I was going through Buddy’s daily folder and I came across a reminder for the end of the year musical performance. On the back of the reminder, it said that Buddy has been chosen to do a solo in one of the songs.

Apparently, the music teacher asked for volunteers, and Buddy volunteered along with a bunch of other kids. But out of all of those kids, Buddy was chosen. I should also mention that this musical is for second graders. Buddy’s in first grade, however, he’s in a split level class, so he, along with his fellow first graders are being included.

I am so proud of him, not only for volunteering to sing a solo, but for being chosen!

I will be that mom. You know, the mom who arrives forty-five minutes early just to get a seat in the front row. The mom who has a video camera (my flip) prominently on display. And yeah, the mom who is so proud, that she can’t help but cry.

Expect a video.

Last week, I listed a bunch of different things for which I’ve been proud of my boys lately. However, I forgot to share (in Buddy’s eyes) the most important one.

Buddy learned to blow a bubble with his gum!

After months of being able to annoy the hell out of everyone “pop” his gum, I figured that learning to blow a bubble wasn’t too far behind.

I remember trying to learn to blow a bubble when I was young. It was frustrating, and very hard work. I’m really proud of him, and he’s super proud of himself. Blowing a bubble…it’s a childhood rite of passage!

Oh, where do I start. Earlier this week, I mentioned that I’ve recently noticed that my boys are growing up, and it’s bittersweet. So many examples have been shoved in my face presented themselves.

First, the boys spent the night with my inlaws last week. The report back was that they were perfect. They didn’t fight with one another the whole night, and they went to bed without a problem.

Second, when I asked Buddy if he wanted to attend the talent show that his school is putting on, he surprised me by saying that he wanted to be in it. When I asked him what he wanted to do, he said he wanted to sing! That’s such a change from the little boy who used to cling to my leg when I dropped him off at before care at his school. (He’s since changed his mind and decided to just go and watch this year, and then maybe participate next year, which tells me that he’s really thinking things through).

Third, last week, after I finished reading Buster his bedtime story, we started talking about the sounds of letters. Out of nowhere, he told me that “Dad begins with D”. I was a little surprised, because we hadn’t started working on that yet, but then figured that was a pretty easy one, so I asked him some more. He can properly identify the first letter of a word by it’s sound more times than not. I was super impressed. I mentioned it to his daycare/Pre-K teacher, and she said that he’s very interested and good at identifying letters. She’s predicting that reading will come easy to him.

And finally, Buster had his first T-ball practice last night. So what if he started running towards short-stop instead of first base after hitting the ball (ha!), or if instead of stepping on home plate, he reached down and touched it with his hand (double ha!). He’s my baby and I can’t believe he’s old enough to play t-ball.

I’m really proud of them for growing and learning, but at the same time, it’s so hard to accept the fact that they are indeed, growing up. It’s bittersweet.

All I can say is that Buster is on a roll. Last week is was lemonade up his nose, the week before, it was embarrassing me in the bathroom, and there are many more before those. He didn’t disappoint this week either.

The last time we went out to eat as a family, Buster tooted at the table. It was a complete “silent but deadly” toot. Unfortunately for Jdaddy, he was sitting right next to him and had to bear the assault on his nose. As soon as Jdaddy realized what happened, he scolded Buster and told him that we don’t toot at the table, especially not at a restaurant. (Does anyone else have to teach their kids these things? I mean, you would think that NOT sticking your straw in your nose and inhaling lemonade and NOT tooting at the table at a restaurant would be a no-brainer…but apparently not??)

Fast forward to Monday night. Buster and I went out to dinner with a friend. During my conversation with my friend, Buster interrupted me and said, “I have to toot!” Remembering what Jdaddy said, he wasn’t going to just do it without announcing it first. I told him that he’d have to hold it.

Ahh, four year olds. They are so literal, right?

As soon as I said that he’d have to hold it, he reached around and cupped his butt with his hand. I couldn’t help but laugh. I mean, that IS funny. So proud. So very, very proud.

This week’s PMM is a bit different than most. This time not only should I be embarrassed, I should probably be a bit ashamed.

Last weekend, we went to Kohls to use our 30% off coupon. While we were there, Buster asked if we could get him some new underwear. I figured he could probably use some new underwear, so I let him pick out a package. Then I realized that Buddy could probably use some new underwear too, so I grabbed a package for him as well.

On Sunday night, after the underwear had been washed and the boys took their showers, I let them put on a new pair. First, Buddy put his on. While stretching every which way and squatting, he proclaimed, “WOW! They don’t even go up my butt crack Mom!”

Next, Buster put on a pair of his new underwear. After pulling them up, he enthusiastically said, “Hey mama! These are just my size!”

I never thought new underwear could create such excitement. Apparently they really needed some new underwear. And apparently, I should have known this. Oops.

Oh, and for another Classic Buster PMM, last night we went out for dinner to celebrate my Father-in-Law’s birthday. While at dinner, Buster stuck the straw to his lemonade up his nose and INHALED. Yes, lemonade went up his nose. And yes, then the lemonade came down his nose. And yes, it did hurt and he did make a little scene.

I swear, I can’t take that kid anywhere!!

Remember my Proud Mommy Moment post about Bathroom Etiquette? In that one, Buster loudly asked me why I was peeing out of my butt while we were in a public restroom. Well, Buster did it again. That kid loves to embarrass me.

Last Friday, we went out to eat, and like clock work, Buster had to go potty during dinner. I took him to the women’s restroom. As soon as we walked in, he loudly proclaimed, “It stinks in here!” Of course we weren’t the only ones in the restroom.

I shushed him and steered him into the nearest stall. Buster then said, “Mama! It smells really bad in here!! I don’t like it.”

Once again, I shushed him.

I got him on the toilet so he could take care of business, and then, in between his grunts, he loudly says, “Mama, please plug my nose for me. It stinks really bad in here.”

Apparently “SHHHH!” means nothing to a four year old. Of course, he was right, it did stink really bad in there!!

If you know anything about me, you’d know that I thrive on routines. Everything is done, every day, in the same order. The most important routine? My morning routine. Now that we have a puppy in the house, I have to get up earlier, get the boys up earlier, and do things out of order.

Jdaddy worked from home on Monday and Tuesday so that we could let Murphy get acclimated to our house. Therefore, my routine didn’t change until yesterday. On Tuesday night, I was talking with the boys about how we needed to change up our morning routine. During the discussion, Buster told me that he didn’t want me to pick him up anymore. I didn’t understand what he meant, but then finally figured out that he meant that he didn’t want me to carry him downstairs in the morning anymore.

I admit it. I carry both of my boys (separately) downstairs in the morning and I help them both get dressed every morning. Even Buddy. He’s 7.5 years old.

When I asked Buster why he didn’t want me to carry him anymore, he simply said it was because he’s a big boy now. I chuckled and told him to tell his big brother that, so he did.

Buddy first responded with, “But I’m tired in the morning!” and then, promptly decided that he couldn’t be outdone by his little brother, so walking downstairs in the morning was fine with him.

Yesterday morning was honestly one of the easiest mornings I’ve had in a long time. I woke up Buddy, we both woke up Buster, and everyone WALKED downstairs on their own. It was awesome. And as much as it sucks that my kids have to tell me they’re growing up and are now “big boys”, it’s also kind of nice.

Buddy got his second trimester report card last week. He’s scored on 48 different areas. For the second trimester, he improved his first trimester scores in 9 areas. Currently, he’s at or above grade level in 45 of the 48 areas. The areas that he needs to continue to work on are things like staying on task, not talking during instruction, and working carefully and neatly.

We’re very impressed with his progress and proud that he’s doing so well.

And because I love humor so much, I just had to add this one…

Last night, as I was putting Buster to bed, I gave him a kiss and then he said, “I wanna hug my ‘big’ mama.” Emphasis on “big.” Gee, thanks Buster.

I asked him if I could be his “small” mama instead and he said that was fine. Hopefully he’ll describe me that way from now on.
